What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of improving how content is represented, used, or cited in generative-engine answers — the responses produced by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Claude. The term was formalized in research that tested content changes across a 10,000-query benchmark. It is the citation-focused layer of the broader AEO discipline: AEO is about being the answer everywhere; GEO is about being the source the generative model names.

Why GEO exists as its own term
Traditional search returns a list; generative engines return a synthesized paragraph with a handful of cited sources. Getting into that short citation list is a distinct challenge from ranking, because the model chooses sources based on authority, semantic fit, freshness, and quotability — not purely on link position. In Ahrefs’ 15,000-prompt study, only 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot also appeared in Google’s top 10 for the same prompt, which is precisely why GEO is treated separately.

How to earn generative citations
- Controlled GEO research found that adding citations, quotations, and statistics improved visibility in its experimental setting, with gains of up to 40% in the study’s benchmark. Treat these as testable practices, not guaranteed ranking factors.
- Reinforce consistent facts everywhere: your site, LinkedIn, and third-party profiles should agree so the model trusts the entity.
- Keep it fresh: generative engines favor recently updated content, especially for commercial questions.
- Earn third-party mentions: being referenced by other credible sites raises the odds a model treats you as authoritative.
- Structure for machines: clean HTML, schema, and answer-first formatting make your content easy to parse and quote.

GEO vs AEO vs SEO in one line
SEO earns the ranking, AEO earns the answer, and GEO earns the citation inside the generated answer. They’re a stack, not rivals — and we run all three together so a single content investment pays off across every surface.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
- Is GEO the same as AEO?
- They overlap heavily. GEO focuses specifically on being cited inside generative AI answers; AEO covers being the answer across all surfaces including snippets and voice. A complete program addresses both, which is how we approach it.
- How do I rank in Perplexity?
- Perplexity states that its answers are grounded in real-time web sources and include inline citations. Keep content accessible, current, clear, and well-supported, then measure actual citation frequency.
